FALL SPORTS ROUNDUP
 
FOOTBALL: The Sentinels wrapped up the year on Friday in a 48-21 loss to St. Mary's on Senior Night at Eubanks Stadium.
 
Seton honored 17 senior football players on the evening and senior Mikey Castro scored twice while senior Isaiah Kubasak hauled in another to provide the scoring for the Sentinels.
 
The team finished the year 2-8, but had close calls against several playoff teams in a hard-fought season.
 
VOLLEYBALL: The Sentinels finished their season with a tough loss to Cactus in the first round of the 4A Playoffs on November 4th.
 
Despite the loss, Seton captured its sixth region title in a row and had six players earn some form of All-Region honors, including Rachel Martinez earning Defensive Player of the Year honors and James Johnson was named Coach of the Year.

BOYS GOLF: The Sentinels boys golf team finished of a great season at the AIA Division II State Meet at the end of October.
 
Seton finished sixth as a team, shooting a two-day total of 640 as a team
 
Nik Kittilson wrapped up his career with a stellar finish, shooting even-par for the tournament to finish in fourth place as an individual.
 
GIRLS GOLF: Sentinel Girl Golfer Lauren Jarvise finished her junior season at the AIA Division II State Meet at the end of October.
 
Jarvise shot 168 over the two days of the event, finishing in 41st place in the state.
 
SWIM & DIVE: The Sentinels finished a great season in the pool at the AIA State Meet on November 5-6, with the girls taking home fourth place as a team.
 
The 200 medley relay team of Brea Zandt, Izabella Nieto, Claire Armstrong at Cat Merrill took home gold in their event, setting a school record in the process.

CROSS COUNTRY: The Sentinels Cross Country boys team wrapped up the season on Saturday at the AIA State Meet at Cave Creek GC.
 
The squad finished 20th in the Division III race, led by a 38th place finish by Zach Albanese and a 75th place finish from Josh Morris.

BOYS GOLF: The Sentinels boys golf team finished of a great season at the AIA Division II State Meet on Wednesday and Thursday in Tucson.
 
Seton finished sixth as a team, shooting a two-day total of 640 as a team

GIRLS GOLF: Sentinel Girl Golfer Lauren Jarvise finished her junior season at the AIA Division II State Meet on Monday and Tuesday down in Tucson.
 
Jarvise shot 168 over the two days of the event, finishing in 41st place in the state.
 
FOOTBALL: The Sentinels continued a string of games against top teams in the state, battling with ranked ALA-Queen Creek on Friday night before falling 55-21 on the road.
 
Seton went into halftime trailing just 21-14 thanks to a pair of TD connections from Jake Morris to Mikey Williamson.
 
However, Seton was unable to keep up in the second half despite finding the end zone one more time as they moved to 2-6 on the year.
 
VOLLEYBALL: The Sentinels finished the regular season with a bang last week, going 3-0 with three sweeps against Marcos de Niza, ALA-Queen Creek and Tempe.
 
The biggest victory of the week came against the Patriots on Wednesday night at McMahon Gymnasium. Needing a win to secure the region title, the Sentinels dominated from the first serve on, sweeping their foes from Queen Creek and capturing the program's sixth region title in a row.
 
SWIM & DIVE: The Sentinels wrapped up the regular a season on Saturday at the Husky Invite against some of the bigger schools in the region.
 
Seton now turns its attention to the State Meet this Friday and Saturday where many Sentinel swimmers are seeded highly on both the boys and girls side.
 
CROSS COUNTRY: The Sentinels Cross Country teams finished the regular season on Wednesday, hosting the Chandler City Invite at Tumbleweed Park.
 
Every Seton runner finished with a personal record, including Zach Albanese, who finished 13th with a time of 16:33 for the boys.
 
Lindsay Hamilton, running in her first race as a Sentinel, posted a time of 25:43.
 
Sentinel Sports Roundup - 10/18-10/24
 
FOOTBALL: The Sentinels hit the road on Thursday to take on a solid Desert Mountain squad in Scottsdale, falling 56-6.
 
Seton notched a first half touchdown on a Mikey Castro run to cut the lead to 14-6 but couldn't find the endzone the rest of the night. The Sentinels moved to 2-5 on the year.
 
VOLLEYBALL: The Sentinels had a busy week with three matches, finishing the week 2-1.
 
On Tuesday, Seton survived a five-set thriller with Mesquite in Gilbert, 3-2 (20-25, 25-18, 27-25, 23-25, 15-11), to keep their region record unblemished.
 
They would keep that momentum going into a top-10 showdown with ALA-Queen Creek on the road in Thursday, finishing sets well in a 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-22) sweep to get a leg up in the region standings.
 
The Sentinels finished the week on a sour note, however, falling in three tight sets in their first home game in nearly a month to Mesquite, 3-0 (25-27, 27-29, 22-25), on Friday night at McMahon Gymnasium.
 
SWIM & DIVE: The Sentinels raced in their final dual meet of the year and had a fantastic showing at the PCDS Small School Invite last week.
 
After racing against ALA-Gilbert North and Apache Junction on Thursday, Seton turned their attention to a AIA State Meet tune up on Saturday and looked good doing so, with the team scoring a second-place finish at the meet.
 
On the girls side, Brea Zandt broke her own school record and won the 100 backstroke and also took second in the 100 freestyle, Izzy Nieto won the 100 breaststroke, Claire Armstrong took third in the 100 fly and the 400 free relay team of Zandt, Armstrong, Kate Rafford and Catalina Merrill took second.
 
For the boys, Aidan Flaherty took fourth in the 50 free, while Dylan Butkiewicz finished 8th in the same race and 7th in the 100 freestyle.
 
GIRLS GOLF: The Sentinels Girls Golf team wrapped up their regular season on Wednesday in a three team match up in Prescott.
 
Seton finished second in the match as a team, paced by Lauren Jarvise (44) and Jamie Gryskiewicz (47), who finished second and third, respectively.
 
Sentinel Sports Roundup - 10/12-10/17
 
FOOTBALL: The Sentinels battled in their matchup up with region rival Mesquite but came up on the short end in a 49-26 loss on Friday night in Gilbert.
 
Seton hung with the Wildcats through the first 15 minutes of the game, using a Mikey Castro touchdown run and a TD pass from Jake Morris to Nick DiPuccio to hold serve at 14-all.
 
But a couple of miscues allowed Mesquite to take a two-touchdown advantage to the break and the Sentinels were unable to catch up, dropping to 2-4 on the year.
 
VOLLEYBALL: The Sentinels travelled to Phoenix for their lone match last week, defeating St. Mary's, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 26-24), in a Catholic Schools showdown on Wednesday.
 
Seton opened strong in the first two sets to take a 2-0 match lead and then grinded out and extra-points thriller in the third set to move to 11-6 on the season.
 
SWIM & DIVE: The Sentinels competed in the Saturday Night Fever Meet at Chandler High School on Saturday night, posting some of their best times of the year.
 
The highlight of the night came in the Girls 100 breaststroke as Izabella Nieto broke the school record by over three seconds, posting a time of 1:09.76
 
CROSS COUNTRY: The Sentinels Cross Country team was in action on Saturday, racing in the Cesar Chavez Classic at Cesar Chavez Park.
 
Zach Albanese and Josh Morris led the way for Seton, finishing with times of 18:28 and 18:38, respectively, to place in the top 50 in a loaded field.
 
BOYS GOLF: The Sentinels boys golf team competed in two matches at Ocotillo last week to finish their regular season, posting some solid rounds in the process.
 
The squad won their match on Tuesday by a stroke over Williams Field thanks to a medalist finish from Nik Kittilson (35) and a second-place finish from Jacob Brown (37).
 
They placed second in a four-team match on Thursday, with Brown (35) taking second place and J.F Schiemer (38) posting a top five finish.
 
GIRLS GOLF: The Sentinels Girls Golf team had a busy week, competing in three matches.
 
Seton won their first matchup of the week at Apache Creek GC, with Lauren Jarvise (41) earning medalist honors and Jamie Gryskiewicz (44) placing third.
 
The Sentinels then placed second in a match on Wednesday out at Apache Creek once again. Gryskiewicz (45) paced the Sentinels with a third place finish.
 
Seton wrapped up the week on Thursday at Western Skies, posting another second place finish. Jarvise (46) placed second and Abby McCormick (51) tied for third.
 
Sentinel Sports Roundup - 10/4-10/11
 
FOOTBALL: The Sentinels played a thriller in their first home game in nearly a month but were unable to find the endzone late in a 48-43 loss to Glendale on Friday night at Eubanks Stadium.
 
Seton and Glendale went back and forth all game, with Seton taking a slim 29-28 lead into halftime thanks to a 11-yard TD pass from Jake Morris to Mikey Williamson and ensuing 2-point conversion.
 
Both teams traded scores in the second half until Glendale scratched out a score in the fourth quarter to take a 48-43 lead.
 
The Sentinels had chances late in the game but couldn't punch in the responding tally. Morris finished with 318 yards passing and two touchdowns while Mikey Castro ran from 142 yards and three TDs while also adding a return touchdown in the loss.
 
VOLLEYBALL: The Sentinels took on Saguaro in their lone match of the week on Wednesday, staying unbeaten in region play with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-20) sweep on the road.
 
Emilee Horky led the offense with 11 kills while Gracie Shearan and Ally Van Devender combined for 19 assists in the victory.
 
SWIM & DIVE: The Sentinels travelled to Scottsdale for a dual meet with Saguaro and Arizona College Prep last Thursday.
 
Both sides of the Seton team challenged themselves by racing different events and set plenty of personal records in each event.
 
CROSS COUNTRY: The Sentinels Cross Country team competed in the Titan Invitational at Crossroads Park on Friday morning, running one of their best races of the year.
 
Zach Albanese led the way, placing fifth with a time of 17:24. Emilio Llanas and Santiago Gamez finished 30th and 31st respectively, finishing within three seconds of each other.
 
Sentinel Sports Roundup - 9/27-10/3
 
FOOTBALL: The Sentinels returned to the field on Friday night at Barry Goldwater, coming up just short in a 20-13 slugfest in Phoenix.
 
The Sentinels played from behind all night and could pull even with the Bulldogs despite two touchdowns from Mikey Castro. They had chances to tie late in the game but couldn't find the end zone as they dropped to 2-2 on the season.
 
VOLLEYBALL: The Sentinels opened their week against Marcos de Niza and then finished with the Nike Invitational over the weekend.
 
Seton took down Marcos de Niza on Monday night on the road, 3-1 (25-14, 25-11, 20-25, 25-9), to move to 2-0 in region play. The Sentinels dominated in the three sets that they won.
 
At the Nike Tournament of Champions, the Sentinels finished pool play 1-2 and finished bracket play on Saturday, turning in a seventh place finish for the two-day event.
 
SWIM & DIVE: The Sentinels hosted their Senior Night on Thursday at Desert Oasis Pool, turning in some solid performances in a quad meet against Notre Dame, St. John Paul II and St. Mary's.
 
On the girls side, Claire Armstrong (50 free, 100 free) and the 200 medley relay team of Armstrong, Camryn Swanson, Izabella Nieto and Faith Fletcher took home victories. 
 
For the boys, the 200 free relay team of PJ Rafford, Tyrus Colomer, Nico Badding and Dylan Butkiewicz scored a win in their race.
 
BOYS GOLF: The Sentinels took home a victory in their lone match of the week on Tuesday, defeating Basha, Mesa and Desert Ridge at Mountain Brook GC.
 
J.F. Schiemer, Nik Kittilson and Luke Padilla all shot even-par 35 to pace Seton to victory over three Division I teams.
 
Sentinel Sports Roundup - 9/20-9/26
 
VOLLEYBALL: The Sentinels picked up two big wins, including their first region win in a 2-0 week last week at McMahon Gymnasium.
 
Seton opened the week by scoring a key victory over Deer Valley in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (25-23, 11-25, 25-21, 14-25, 15-12), on Tuesday.
 
The Sentinels buckled down in there three set wins, closing all three of them out in a tight fashion to beat the previously unbeaten Skyhawks.
 
They would use that momentum to score an emotional win on Thursday against Saguaro, 3-1 (25-19, 25-13. 18-25, 25-20). The Sentinels jumped out to a big lead and then closed it out after a small bump in the road in the third set to move to 6-2 overall.
 
SWIM & DIVE: The Sentinels were busy last week in the pool, competing in a dual meet at Mesquite on Thursday and swimming in the PCDS Eagle Invite on Saturday, posting some of their best times of the year.
 
At the Eagle Invite, two school records were broken on the girls side. The 200 Medley Relay team of Brea Zandt, Claire Armstrong, Catalina Merrill and Izabella Nieto finished with a time of 1:55.18, shaving three seconds off of school record while Zandt also set the 100 backstroke record of 1:01.74.
 
The boys had plenty of good times as well, led by Dylan Butkiewicz.
 
 
 
GIRLS GOLF: The Sentinels Girls Golf Team faced off against Campo Verde last Thursday at Springfield GC. 
 
Lauren Jarvise continued her strong play, finishing with a 39 and a second-place individual finish to lead the way for Seton.
 
BOYS GOLF: The Sentinels Boys Golf had a busy week, taking on Williams Field and Higley on Tuesday and competing in the Encanterra Invite on Thursday and Friday.
 
The Sentinels played well on Tuesday, finishing with a team score of 152. Nik Kittilson finished under par (33) to take home medalist honors while Jacob Brown and J.F. Schiemer both shot 38 to post top-five finishes for Seton
 
The team would then finish with a score of 660 over two rounds at the Encanterra Invitational. Kittilson posted the top individual finish, shooting a score of 152 and placing 13th.
 
CROSS COUNTRY: The Sentinels Cross Country was in action on Friday evening at the Desert Twilight Invitational at the Links Golf Course in Queen Creek.
 
Both Zach Albanese (17:26) and Josh Morris (17:58) posted sub-18 times to lead the Seton team.
 
Sentinel Sports Roundup - 9/6-9/12
 
FOOTBALL: The Sentinels put up a thrilling back-and-forth fight against visiting Deer Valley on Friday night, but came up just short in a 47-35 loss at Eubanks Stadium.
 
After a quiet first quarter, Deer Valley struck for 20 points in the second stanza. Seton was able to close the gap near halftime thanks to a touchdown catch from Patrick McNally from Jake Morris.
 
The Sentinels would trim the lead right out of the break, as Morris found Mikey Williamson for a 25-yard score. However, one touchdown would be the closest Seton could get despite three more touchdowns, as they moved to 1-1 on the young year.
 
Morris finished with 263 yards and three TDs through the air, while Mikey Castro had a night on the ground, rushing for 240 yards and two TDs.
 
VOLLEYBALL: The Sentinels finished a busy week 2-1, notching wins against Poston Butte and Apache Junction before falling to top-ranked Notre Dame Prep.
 
Against the Broncos on Tuesday in a three-set sweep, Emilee Horky led the attack with seven kills and Ally Van Devender dished out 18 assists. Rachael Martinez led the defense with 12 digs.
 
In Wednesday's matchup with Apache Junction, Horky and Katie LaLicata each finished with double-digit kills in the four-set victory. Van Devender notched a double-double, finishing with 30 assists and 15 digs and Martinez recorded 24 digs for Seton.
 
The Sentinels were unable to keep up the momentum against the Saints at home on Thursday, falling in three sets.
 
SWIM & DIVE: The Sentinels hosted their first meet of the year on Thursday at Arrowhead pool against Chandler Prep, Tempe and Tempe Prep, securing victories against all three schools
 
The girls side posted plenty of top times, scoring seven event wins - 200 Medley Relay (Merrill, Fletcher, Zandt, Rennard), 200 IM (Brea Zandt), 50 Freestyle (Kate Rafford), 100 Freestyle (Claire Armstrong), 500 Freestyle (Faith Fletcher), 200 Free Relay (Armstrong, Rennard, Rafford, Zandt) & 100 Backstroke (Morgan Linnen).
 
On the boys side, a top finished was posted by Dylan Butkiewicz in the 100 Freestyle
 
BOYS GOLF: The Sentinels Boys Golf team had a stellar week last week, capping it off with an invitational win on Friday.
 
On Tuesday, Seton finished just three shots off the lead in a three-team match at Ocotillo. Nik Kittilson fired a even-par 36 to lead the way.
 
On Wednesday at the East Valley Open at Las Colinas, the Sentinels finished in a tie for second place at a team. Kittilson tied for medalist honors with a 5-under 66, while Luke Padilla (75) and Jacob Brown (76) posted top-20 finishes for Seton.
 
The Sentinels posted another second-place finish in a four-team match on Thursday at Las Colinas, with Kittilson shooting a three-under 33 and Brown firing a 39.
 
Seton wrapped up the busy week by winning the Aguila Invitation with a team score of 303, besting Chaparral by a stroke. Kittilson was the medalist with a even-par 72, with Padilla turning in a third-place finish with a 73.
 
CROSS COUNTRY: The Sentinels Cross Country team tackled a tough course at Freestone Park on Friday for the Western Equinox Invitational.
 
Zach Albanese and Josh Morris finished back-to-back in 37th and 38th place, respectively, with times of 18:21 and 18:27, while Emilio Llanas broke 20-minutes with a time of 19:53.
 
Seton Spring Sports Land 90 Athletes on Sports360AZ All-Academic teams
 
The Seton Catholic Preparatory athletic department is excited to announce that 90 winter athletes from seven sports teams were honored on the Sports360AZ All-Academic Teams, the site announced on Monday.
 
The award honors all athletes who participated at the varsity level during the year and earns a 3.5 weighted GPA or better OR a 3.0 unweighted GPA or better.
 
The Sentinels earned 39 first-team All-Academic honors (4.0 weighted GPA or higher) and another 51 athletes earned honorable mention honors. The program breakdown went like this:
 
  • Baseball - 11 total honors (3 1st Team, 8 HM)
  • Softball - 12 total honors (4 1st Team, 8 HM)
  • Girls Beach Volleyball - 15 total honors (9 1st Team, 6 HM)
  • Boys Volleyball - 3 total honors (1 1st Team, 2 HM)
  • Girls Tennis - 13 total honors (8 1st Team, 5 HM)
  • Boys Tennis - 4 total honors (2 1st Team, 2 HM)
  • Track & Field - 32 total honors (12 1st Team, 20 HM)
 
This continued another successful season for Seton athletics both in the classroom and on the fields & courts, with three sports reaching the State Tournament and the softball team collecting their first region title in 11 years
 
 
Seton Winter Sports Land 44 Athletes on Sports360AZ All-Academic teams
 
The Seton Catholic Preparatory athletic department is excited to announce that 44 winter athletes from five sports teams were honored on the Sports360AZ All-Academic Teams, the site announced on Monday.

This continued another successful season for Seton athletics both in the classroom and on the fields & courts, with two teams making the state tournament, including the 12th State Title by the Girls Basketball and an State Individual Runner-Up finish by wrestling.

Wrestling wraps up season at State, Eviston takes 2nd

The Seton Catholic Preparatory wrestling teams wrapped up a solid year on the mat at the AIA Division IV meet on Tuesday and Wednesday at Poston Butte.
 
Junior Lucas Eviston finished his stellar year by finishing in second place at the 120 pound weight class. He racked up three pins in under 2:00 minutes on his way to the final before falling in a 5-2 decision to end his run. He finished the year with a 12-1 record.
 
Jesse Matthias also wrestled at the meet at the 138 pound weight class. He fell in two tough matches to end his year.
 
Both wrestlers will be back next year for coach Joe Montellano, looking to improve upon their success this year.
 

XC State Recap

The Seton Catholic Preparatory Cross Country teams finished their 2020 season last Thursday in the AIA Division III State Meet held at Crossroads Park in Gilbert.
 
The boys team finished in 15th place in a stacked field, ending a phenomenal season that was capped with their first sectional championship in over 10 years. Josh Morris led the Seton pack, placing 54th.
 
Ellie Sericati wrapped up her season, representing the Sentinels as an individual, finishing with a time of 22:51.
 
Everyone who competed at the state meet will be back for the program next year, as the Sentinels should build on the success they had this season.

S/D State Recap

The Seton Catholic Preparatory swim and dive team had an outstanding AIA State meet, with Sentinels swimmers medaling in five events and breaking two school records in the process at PCDS on Saturday.
 
On the boys side, Christian Steele took home fourth place in the 50yd freestyle and also broke his own school record in the 100yd butterfly with a time of 52.25, finishing just outside of a medal. Nick Grabauskas also took home fourth in the 100yd breaststroke for Seton.
 
For the girls, Ruth Lucht had an outstanding meet, finishing 2nd in the 500yd freestyle, 3rd in the 200yd freestyle and then taking 3rd with her teammates Izabella Nieto, Claire Armstrong and Siena Rennard in the 200yd Medley Relay, breaking the school record with a time of 1:58.34.

BG State Recap

The Seton Catholic Preparatory Boys Golf team competed in the AIA State Meet last week, qualifying for it for the fourth year in a row.
 
The Sentinels finished in ninth place as a team over the two-day event, finishing with a team total of 643.
 
Nik Kittilson was the top individual for the Sentinels, placing just outside the top 10 by shooting a 143 over his two rounds. He was just one shot out of the lead after Wednesday’s first round after firing a 4-under 68.
 
Rocco Gump was the next highest individual for Seton, finishing his golf career with a 37th place finish.

XC Sectional Recap

The Seton Catholic Preparatory Cross Country teams had a great race at their AIA Sectional Meet on Wednesday at Crossroads Park in Gilbert.
 
The boys team won the the Division III East Section Championship, the first sectional championship for the Sentinels in over 10 years. They were paced by Josh Morris and Jack Rodriguez, who finished in 7th and 8th place, respectively. Ethan Cleland and Zach Albanese also posted top-20 times to help Seton claim the title. The title also qualified the team for the AIA State Meet his week.
 
On the girls side, Ellie Sericati joined the boys team at the state meet by posting a 22nd-place finished, which qualified her as an individual.
 
The Sentinels will be back at Crossroads Park on Thursday for the Division III AIA State Meet, looking to finish their season on a high note.
